The Jungle Club is part of a PTA program at Stoneleigh Elementary called Walking Wednesdays.
It all started in the fall of 2004 when Stoneleigh joined schools all over the world to walk to school on International Walk to School Week. Kids were so excited that they didn't want to stop and kept going from Washington, DC all the way to San Francisco. Since then, Stoneleigh students have logged 36,012 miles and have walked the Silk Road Across China, Hopped Across Africa with an Impala, followed the Eurail across Europe, and this year, they're walking from the Andes to the Amazon.
To support our school's quest to earn Green School status, we'll be tracking our progress by using a blog. Stop by and visit anytime!

Just how does Walking Wednesdays work? Here are some answers you may be looking for:
Can I walk any day or just on Wednesdays?
Walking Wednesdays is just a catchy name for the idea that walking to school is cool! Walk whenever you can and wherever you can. It all counts! Some people can only walk once in a while - maybe on Wednesdays, but maybe Thursdays are better for you. For some people its easier to walk home than it is to walk to school in the morning. Some people can only walk part of the way. Whatever works for you and your family is fine. We think that once you try walking you're going to like it so much, you'll find ways to walk even more!
Can I record my blocks any day, or only if I walk on Wednesdays?
Any day you walk counts toward our walk across South America!
I ride the bus and I feel left out. How can I participate?
No need to feel left out! Every time you make the choice to walk instead of driving somewhere, that counts! You can record any trip you take to the store, church, a friend's house, a hike in the woods, etc. It all counts toward our school's total miles.
I ride my bike to school, does that count?
Absolutely! Biking, skating, scooting, hopping, skipping, walking, running - it all counts if you aren't burning fossil fuels to get to school. Its all great exercise, reduces the traffic at our school, helps you get to know your community and helps the environment.
Walking Wednesday wins 2 Baltimore County PTA Awards!
In 2006, our Walking Wednesday program was awarded the BCPS PTA Best Family Involvelment Program and in 2007 we were awarded the Best Health and Safety Program.
